Situated in the heart of Scotland, Callander is a town of about three-thousand people located in the region of Stirling and on the River Teith. Because of its location it is quite frequently referred to as the Gateway to the Highlands, since it is located on the edge of Scotland’s most famous national park.
These days, the area is famous for its hiking routes. One of the most famous hiking routes in the area is that Trossachs Bird of Prey Trail which passes right through the town. The town is also located at the edge of the Trossachs National Park, the first established in Scotland.
The whole area has an extensively ancient history. Originally settled in prehistoric times, there is some impressive evidence that they were farming communities in the area as far as 6000 years ago. Various excavations have been made in the area of a number of Neolithic sites. Since then, there was a Roman outpost built nearby and in the sixth century, the place was reached by a number of Christian missionaries who came to teach in the area.
The town grew in size and significance in the latter part of the 18th century. Towards the end of the 19th century, tourism slowly started to take off and a number of new hotels were constructed and trading increased rapidly. With a rapidly rising number of private cars and coach tours, tourism and really taken off in the area in the years after 1930.
By far the most famous part of the area is Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. These areas are both best explored from being based in Callander. The surrounding countryside is very impressive and amongst the most pleasant in Scotland. What’s more, is that it is protected by the Scottish government which promotes the area as an area of outstanding natural beauty.
